Titleist Vokey Wedges or Cleveland CG12

Postby Paxton on Wed Jun 24, 2009 9:15 pm

I'm a competitive high school golfer and soon to be college golfer. I want to overhaul my wedges. I have a 56 degree Vokey and love it. The grooves though are no longer really there. I can't decide though wheather I shall invest in Cleveland CG12, I believe there called or the spin milled wedges from Titleist. I would like to know some advantages and disadvantages of both and what you people personally think of each. Can anyone help me out? I'm looking to purchase a 48, 52, and a 56 degree.

Thanks,
Paxton

Paxton, great question and thanks a lot for your interest.

I'll start by saying that you really can't go wrong with either wedge. Cleveland has quickly become one of the premier wedge makers in the business, and Bob Vokey is of course, a legend. Both wedges are extremely versatile and should be able to handle anything you can throw at them: sand, both hard and soft surfaces, deep grass, etc.

The Vokey is going to offer you a bit of a more sole-heavy wedge, a feature preferred by many players, with weight concentrated in the sole of the club to help you stay down on partial swings and chipping. Also, in the past, the Vokey wedges were priced more expensive than its competitors. It's only been recently that their price has dropped to match Cleveland and other manufacturers.

On the other hand, the CG12's Zip Grooves should offer you a bit more spin as opposed to the milled face of the Vokey's (and, for me, the Black Pearls are a thing of beauty). I'll direct you here for an in depth look into what Cleveland has to say about the technology of their Zip Grooves.

Lastly, if you're a fan of Golf Digest's Hot List, I'll tell you that both wedges were given Gold status by the testers, with the Vokey wedges receiving the highest marks in all tested categories: Performance, Innovation, Look/Sound/Feel, and Demand. Check out both write-ups on this page.

With all that said, and as much as I love the Black Pearls, I think I would personally go with the classic Vokey, but that's not to take anything away from what Cleveland is doing. I hope this helps you with your decision, and if you have any other questions, don't hesitate to hit us up again.

Paxton,

This is the classic question. Vokey vs Cleveland wedges.

While I agree with Kyle that you "can't really go wrong with either" I have to give you my own experiences. I played Cleveland wedges for years (I am currently in the Nike Victory Red at the moment but have all my Cleveland's ready to go at a moments notice) and tried to fall in love with the Titleist Vokey stuff.

When I played in college, it was an unwritten rule that you HAD to play Titleist equipment. You weren't a player if you didn't and so we all had Titleist stuff. I had the driver, played the irons and bought the wedges almost sight unseen.

The wedges were the worst of the lot for me and have never recovered for some reason. I find them to be AWESOME looking but have just too low of a trajectory for my game. The Cleveland's don't look as pretty to my eye, but the versatility is so much better for me that it was not even a contest.

I would suggest trying a few at your local range or at your local pro-shop to see what suits your game the best prior to getting anything, just to be sure.

Keep hitting em out there and play well!

I would have to say go with the Clevelands. There is a reason they were the number one wedge on the tour for 13 years straight. I have Cleveland wedges myself and absolutely love them.

I played a Vokey for a few years, then somehow it got broken in half, go figure! I replaced it with the same Black Pearl CG12. Wow. It is probably all in my head, but I absolutely fell in love with it. In particular, on full shots, I feel that it gets in the more quickly and with greater ease than any wedge I've used before. Honestly, I didn't notice too much of a difference on my chip and pitch shots as opposed to the vokey, but the full shots sold me. I also love the look. I know you can't see the backside of the CG14 at address, but that yellow dampener on the back just turned me off. I'm going to stick with the CG12 for a while.

I just "had an accident" with my Nike VR 56* so I am thinking I am going to go with the DSG CG12 Cleveland wedge.

My how they do so well for such a short period of time, then let you down so severely ha ha.
