New Clubs

Postby Bruce on Wed Jun 24, 2009 6:45 pm

Currently I am playing a set of 5 year old talyor mades. It appears that the prices of quality irons have dropped dramatically with downturn of the economy so im looking to buy now. I play at least 3 times a month with going to the range a few times in between. I will have to have the iron made longer as I am taller and have to bend down a great deal with my current clubs. I was wondering what affect having them enlongated would have on specific clubs. I hit the ball a long way so im looking for feel and some forgiveness. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

Hey Bruce,
I'm not an expert, but I do play alot of golf. I demo the new Taylormade Burner Plus Irons with 1 1/2 in. extended. If you are looking for a forgiving club and feel. I would recommend these. I plan on ordering some soon!

Bruce,
I know all too well the difficulties in finding the perfect set of irons when you are a little taller then average (I'm 6'6). There usually is no 'Off the Rack' set available in most discount stores, though some shops do carry longer clubs. The Adams IDEA Hybrid iron line has historically been longer than average (sometimes between 1" & 1.25" longer) and some graphite shafted irons can be .5" to 1" longer than normal. It sounds like you are a pretty big hitter, so I would probably talk you out of getting any graphite shafted irons (usually not stiff enough).

Any negative effects of having standard length clubs extended?

Extending standard length clubs can be an alternative to custom ordering them but one of the negatives is the dramatic change in the clubs swing weight. When you extend the length, each iron's swing weight changes A TON (becomes very head heavy) and can really wear on you over a course of a round. With custom orders, club companies can reduce the swing weight during production.

What I suggest you should do, if you can, is go to a driving range/golf course/discount shop and see if you could get fitted for a set. Some places charge for this service, some don't. Its not a difficult process but is necessary if you want to get the right fit/feel for your longer clubs. Once you get your fitting specs the hard part is choosing your set!

Usually, here at GolfDiscount.com, when we place custom orders through the major club manufacturers, the turn around time is about 2-3 weeks, but your first round playing with fitted clubs definitely will make it worth the wait!

If you have specific fitting questions, give our customer service line a call. They wold be glad to help you through the process of selection, hammer out your personal specifications, and get an order going through whatever manufacturer you chose, so you can get out there and experience the wonders of custom clubs as soon as possible!

Bruce, to help aid you in your browsing I've thrown together a few links to our site, and highlighted a few promotions that will hopefully make your search a bit easier.

Here is a link to all of the many iron sets we carry, and if you're interested in checking out Paxton's recommendation, here is our Burner Plus page.

Personally, I find the current Cleveland Iron promotion that is going on to be particularly awesome. If you buy any full set of Cleveland irons from now until December 31st, you will be able to register your clubs with Cleveland and be eligible to trade in these irons for any new Cleveland set introduced between January 1st, 2010 and December 31st, 2011. This will allow you to have new clubs now, and also trade in for new clubs anytime you want within the next two years. Here are all our current Cleveland iron sets and here is a link to all the specific information about the promotion.

We also have a group of name brand irons on sale for 399.00. With sets from Adams, Cobra, Nike, and TaylorMade. You may have a better idea about this after a fitting, or after talking to one of our experts on the phone, but the Slingshots and FP II's are already available in a Men's+1 (inch) size setup. The same goes for our Nike Sumo's, also priced at 399.00. Lastly, seeing that you've been a TaylorMade guy for the last 5 years, I'll let you know that the Burner XD's just had a price reduction, down to 499.00 for steel.

I hope this helps you in your quest, and please let us know if you have any further questions. Good luck!

Bruce,

That Cleveland promotion that Kyle talks about is so darn cool it isn't even funny. In my 16+ years in the golf biz I have never seen anything like it before. The cool thing is that you can, for example, buy a set of hibore irons during the promotion and decide that they do not have enough playability for your game and get the more playable clubs next year when the new stuff comes out.

It is brilliant!

I can't help but key in on something you said about wanting more "feel" and that you already hit the ball a fair distance for your desires from your game.

If that is the case, and feel is your first priority in a new set of sticks, look toward a forged golf club. Mizuno, Bridgestone, Callaway, and many others have fantastic forged clubs that promote feel for the golfer looking for a club that can give them immediate response at impact.

In all you do, just make sure you demo a few to find out what suits you best and make sure you get fitted to make sure that whatever you choose is built to your swings tenancies.

Have fun out there and PLAY WELL!
