Lorena Ochoa Retires!

April 20th, 2010

There are a few people that so completely dominate their sport that you have to pay attention. Tiger, of course, is golf’s equivalent to athletes like Wayne Gretzky, Michael Jordan, Carl Lewis, and others.

Today we lose one of the dominant players of the last 10 years on the LPGA Tour. Lorena Ochoa retires at age 28 (if I were only so lucky ha ha) with a resume that already guarantees her enshrinement in the LPGA hall of fame.

She rose to stardom faster than just about any player before her and won darn near everything she played in for about 4 years. It was domination like Annika had, and like nobody has since.

Losing her is a huge blow for the LPGA while they struggle to find marketable stars to carry the brand. While the sex appeal is there in players like Gulbis, the current “heavy hitters” on their tour are predominantly not American.

The players on the LPGA tour are fantastic. I would suggest watching some events. In fact, I find that watching them play is better for my game and equipment choices than watching the PGA tour is. After all, I hit it about as far as most the LPGA women do……….though they kick my butt in scoring.

The injury to Paula Creamer was never so big as right now for this tour.
Good luck in your future endeavors Lorena, we will miss you!

Why is it that you hear SO much about the men and a quiet whisper about the ladies. Our newspaper had a large article about Bohn at Zurich and a little paragraph about Ochoa. A guess it’s just the nature of sports to tell all about the big strong men. Someday maybe the ladies can get equal time and newspaper space.

    Bernadette,

I agree. I find it amazing that ladies sports are so easily brushed aside. It seems like the only sports that get any attention is ice skating and tennis. Most men would do a much better service to their games to watch Ladies golf. They are fantastic and hit the ball about the same distance as most good amateur men. Though they score MILES better ha ha.
