Tiger Stuns the World

February 19th, 2010

Okay, okay, so the choice of headline might not be the reality that I want it to be, but it sounded good. Right?

The best player to ever hold a golf club broke his silence today and the whole world was watching or listening. I heard it and rather than dissect his every word or intonation looking for meaning as to when he will return, I am going to take this in a different direction.

I am going to say “WHO CARES?”

Really, was this REALLY front page, stop the press, cease transmission and buy into the feed, stuff?

Was it really?

Was this worth changing the channel from the Olympics? Was it worth stopping my DVR’d coverage of the match play? Was it worth not checking out the new webisode of “Community” online?

Millions, like me, said yes……………and I wish I hadn’t.

What I saw and heard was exactly what Tiger has become. In fact, it might be what he always was. I saw a soulless robot reading a prepared statement as if he was speaking to nobody at all.

I thought for a moment we were seeing a real life “Wag the Dog” moment.

While his glazed over stare fought for tears that are not ever coming (remember, Terminators do not cry) he, again pleaded for privacy. Meanwhile,  Kristoff was high above asking for more dramatic music to accompany his creation. (from about 1:05 on you will understand what I mean)

We saw Tiger in about as glaring a reality as we have ever seen him. He was apologetic and seemed as sincere as a non-human can while reading from a page he probably did not write.

The big difference between Tiger and politicians is charisma. While neither of them are telling you the entire truth, one is doing so with gusto. The other is reading in monotone. One is trying to sell you something you don’t want to buy and the other has not bought into anything his whole life.

The guy was, and is a social nightmare. We call him “a golf nerd.”

Want proof?

Tell me how many 23 year old men call their Dad their best friend. Okay, so there are a few, but if they don’t call their Dad their best friend, do they call 50+ year old Mark O’Meara their best friend?

Tiger grew up sheltered from reality and has lived there ever since. Every move is calculated and scripted and today’s soliloquy was no different. Scripted and calculated Tiger told you everything you wanted to hear to begin rebuilding the Tiger legacy.

Maybe it will work and maybe it won’t, but I am tired of all this talk. I am with Oliver Wilson and Rory McIlroy, this is old. Boring. Tired. Silly.

I just want to see him in this light not the bright lights of hollywood sets. Scripts are for actors, and that is what we might have seen today.
