Passing The Time Mentally

October 29th, 2009

So you are dedicated? You are talking the wife into letting you chip in the living room while she is not there? You got your weighted swing trainer? Well all you need now is to keep the brain sharp and in “golf shape.”

How do you do that if you can’t play a hole of golf let alone a round of golf?

Last time we talked about golf, and other video games. Along with keeping your reflexes sharp and your hand-eye coordination on point, you can exercise some strategical muscles in your brain using video games.

Some golf themed games are so realistic that you have to make “real golf” decisions as you play. Go for it, risk reward, lay up, all these decisions are posed to you in the course of a round of video golf.

The most realistic of the golf video games is the Tiger Woods Golf franchise from EA Sports.

But if you are not into video games, or do not have access to a game console, what can you do to keep your mind sharp? There are a few good ideas.

You can read. Reading is a great way to do a “mental workout.” Read golf books if you are as nerded out as I am, but some of the better books to keep your mind working are thrillers or mystery themed books. Keeping your mind working on “who done it” can really provide a little fuel to keep your brain focused like it would need to be for a round of golf.

If you don’t want to read, that is okay. You can channel your competitive nature into other forms of competition. You can play cards, you can start a rip roarin’ board gameĀ  up with a buddy, or you can get into bowling or another indoor sport that might carry you through the winter.

If all else fails, hop a plane to a warm place and get to really playing………if that is an option for you, TAKE IT ha ha.

In all, Winter is tough on us golfers. Find a few different ways to keep things physically and mentally fit and you will be a step ahead of the rest come spring time when the sticks can be brought out again.
