Winter REALLY Sucks

October 21st, 2009

So we winterized our golf bag and equipment last time but we forgot one very simple fact of winter golfing.

IT IS COLD AND WET!!!!!!!!!

So what can we do about our bodies and how do we keep warm and dry?

This is where it gets hairy for me. I am one of the kind of people that has to be reminded to put a jacket on when it is cold. My Dad used to dress me down about it from time to time. I can still hear his voice, thick with frustration at my stupidity, “Aren’t you going to wear a jacket?”

My answer was always the same, “I can’t swing with clothing on over my shirts.”

I still do not wear rain gear, more on that later as I am making some changes, but I do like to be warm. I wear a “compression” shirt much like T.O. or the sleeves of guys like Carmello Anthony or Allen Iverson. They keep me warm and do not inhibit my swing at all…….or so I think.

This year I am going to give some rain gear a try. I am going to roll out the Sun Mountain Rainflex pant and jacket combo. Actually it is not a jacket so much as it is a pullover, but anything is going to feel like a jacket to me.

I have tried them on and they are very comfortable and I really think I will be able to swing with them on. I’ve got my fingers crossed.

If that isn’t enough for warmth, you can always try the hand warmers.  This little “fire in a bag” beauties are pocket sized and can fry an egg* if you let it.

*They actually won’t fry an egg and please don’t try, it will not only taste bad, but it will probably mess up your pants with egg yolk.*

If that isn’t enough and you REALLY want to keep toasty while playing, get yourself a riding cart and fire up the Golf Cart Heater. Fueled by propane, this little sucker hums along at 3,000 BTUs of heat throwing power to keep you AND YOU ALONE warm………don’t you dare share this with your opponent, let him freeze.

The last piece of rain and cold busting apparel you need to have is a good hat. When it is raining, nothing is more frustrating than water dripping down your face while you are trying to putt. I suggest the Sun Mountain stuff again as they make both the bucket hat and the cap style hat in a waterproof version.

If you are like me, rain, sleet, hail, snow, all the elements outside of a hurricane in the North Pole are not going to stop me from getting my golf fix. But I can tell you this……..they can make it a miserable experience if you are not prepared. SUIT UP!
