The Superbowl In April??

April 10th, 2009

April is my favorite time of year. I am a huge football fan and so fall holds a special place in my heart as a new season dawns and the possibility of greatness hangs in the air. But THIS is the best time of year for a guy like me, and probably like you too.

I know I promised a blow by blow account of my trip to Vegas and that is coming. I think that it would be presumptuous and almost sacrilegious to NOT talk about the Superbowl happening RIGHT NOW!!

That is right, you heard me correctly. THE Superbowl, MY Superbowl is happening right now….and I am stuck at a desk ha ha. Every April I am lucky enough to visit a familiar place. A place so rich in memory that I have to brush them away from my eyes to see my computer. A place I know like the back of my hand, or my own home, but have never been to. Every April I get the splendor of the Masters!

I was there when Nicklaus stiffed that 3 iron on #15. I was there when Larry Mize hit that chip on #11 that had as much chance of being dry as it did go in the hole. I was there when Nick Faldo overcame Greg Norman in one of the most heart wrenching days in golf memory. I was there when Ben Crenshaw bent over bawling on #18. I was there when Tiger blew the field away and ushered in a new era of The Masters. I was there a few short years later when he chipped in on #16 with the most dramatic shot, possibly, ever struck.

I was there for them all. I know every bump of every fairway and every break on every green. I know where the pins will be come late Sunday on every hole. I know all this, and have NEVER set foot on the golf course….to be honest, I have never set foot in the STATE!

But this is my Superbowl. This is the sporting event that I hold in the highest regard. This is the week that I wait for every year. I have calendared my sports life based on this week. This is the one.

The closest I have ever experienced was Superbowl week 2005 when my Seattle Seahawks went to Ford Field in Detroit to try to bring a championship to the great city of Seattle. I can be completely honest in saying that I went from goosebumps to tears that day and that is not even CLOSE in comparison to the feeling I get this week.

I will be front and center come Sunday. I have a tradition of sitting there all day with a 24 pack of Corona with one of my best friends, Tony, and watching every shot. We will be there again, just like every year, at OUR Superbowl!
