The 5 Best Looking Clubs Of ALL TIME pt. 2

March 2nd, 2009

Driver isn’t the only club in the bag and so it shouldn’t be the only one to win an award right? Years ago, Lee Trevino played a “mixed” bag of clubs. His #5 iron might have been a Top Flite while his #9 might have been a Hogan Apex blade. His contention was that he would play the best looking clubs in every piece of his set. Matching was not his style ha ha.

I have one of those on here, but most of this list will be best looking irons. And the nominees and winners are…

1) Titleist #8 iron

I know what you are thinking, “which model Tom?” I have no answer for that except to say, ANY MODEL! If you have never held a Titleist #8 iron in your hand be prepared to fall in love. The shape is absolutely perfect on that club. The toe is perfectly rounded and the way the top line flows into the hosel is nothing short of beautiful. If they could build me a full set of clubs that all look like the #8 iron, I would be a happy boy.

I know, I know. I play them so I HAVE to be bias, Right? That theory, if not already, will be proven wrong. I have never played a set of Titleist irons and I LOVE their #8 irons, more proof to come. This set is perfect. The color scheme from the back is perfect. The stamping of the number on the sole is perfect. The way the set seamlessly moves from cavity back to blade is perfect. The look of the shaft with the head is perfect. Enough said.

3) Mizuno Custom Japan irons

mizuno_customI have seen these once. A local in Vegas ordered a set. They were the strangest, most lovely things I had seen to that point. The Mizuno custom stuff was ordered from the foundry in Japan with any specs you could ask for. You got to customize the shape, top line thickness, toe style, sole width, and stamping. The version my friend got, was blank. Not a logo on it. It looked like a chromed masterpiece,  a one of a kind. At a cost of $5000+ they looked like they were worth every penny. I am not sure if they played like they were worth every penny as I was not allowed to hit them.

731_pm14) Titleist 731 PM irons

These were built in left hand only. This set was one of the reasons I am not a Phil Mickelson, or a Titleist fan. The set was a “combo” set with cavity back long irons and blade shorties. It was cast, but the chroming was beautiful and really popped in a golf bag. The top line was thin and the toe was “just right.” I sure wish there would have been a right handed set. Oh well. For obvious reasons, I never hit this set at all.

muirfield5) Macgregor Nicklaus blades

This set was another I never was allowed to hit. The first guy that ever hired me to work in the golf industry had a set and they were AWESOME. These were blades in every sense of the word. They looked like “butter knives” in the long irons and the shorties had the most thin, square toe in the world. Gorgeous. Just gorgeous.

Part 3 is on the way…..stay tuned!
