2009 Major predictions

February 9th, 2009

The golf season is in full swing now.  We have a couple of champions under our belt and so it is with great regret that I get to my 2009 predictions a tad late.

I would have been dead wrong right out of the gate as I would have picked an Australian (most likely Stuart Appleby) to have won by now.

So without further build up….AWAY WE GO……….

I should probably start with the goods and then get to some more bizarre stuff so that you get the “white meat” first and can then, pretty much, tune out for the rest of the post…

My predictions for the winners of the Major Championships are as follows;

1) Masters played at Augusta National, April the 9th-12th: Robert Allenby

Those of you that know me will know that I have picked this guy to win a major for about 5 years now. I think that he has all the tools to win at Augusta and I like his game more than any of the other Australians. I know that Adam Scott is ranked higher and is the man as far as the Aussies go, but I still am picking Allenby to win a major first out of the group of Allenby, Scott, and Appleby.

Appleby would be the best story among them though.

2) U.S. Open played at Bethpage Black, June 18th-21st: Tiger Woods

Not the greatest stretch here, but how can you bet against Tiger for at least one. He LOVES the “public golf course Opens” and won at Bethpage last time the Open was in NYC. I look for him to do the same this time. I look for a battle down the stretch with someone like Justin Rose or a Phil Mickelson.

3) British Open played at Turnberry, July 16th-19th: Justin Rose

The British Open returns to Turnberry for the first time since 1994. Greg Norman won here in 1986 and after last years stunning contention, could this be where the Shark finalizes his legacy? I say not a chance. This is where Justin Rose culminates a very strange beginning to his career with a major win. The kid that dazzled in an Open just a few years previously could make good at Turnberry. I look for a Sergio Garcia sighting here as well. He will get one soon, just not this one.

4) PGA Championship played at Hazeltine, August 13th-16th: Sergio Garcia

I told you he would get one…just not the British. Sergio finally breaks through and wins a Major this year. Rich Beem won one at Hazeltine in 2002 and Sergio will get his first in 2008. It will be a battle between he and Tiger again but this time Sergio will putt lights out and steal one from the best player on the planet.

Other Predictions:

Padraig Harrington will not win more than 1 tournament all year on any continent.

Tiger Woods will win 4+ tournaments and will be crowned player of the year.

John Daly will play in 5+ tournaments missing the cut in each one.

Someone will make a 10 on the 17th at Sawgrass in the Players Championship.

Davis Love III will NEVER win a tournament again. (those of you that get the joke will love this one ha ha)

Chad Campbell will win a tournament this year.

Anthony Kim will NOT win a tournament this year. (I like this kid, but I don’t think he will have a very good year)

Someone will have 2 hole in ones on tour this year. (Yes I mean the same guy)

Last but CERTAINLY not least, I will break 70 2+ times this year. It has been a while so I am due!

Please do not put any amount of money on any of these predictions as I am pretty much “the jinx box.” In fact, I would suggest placing any bets to the opposite of what I have stated so as to partake of a financial windfall that is almost certain to befall you.

HIT EM WELL!

Apart from the obvious predictions of who will win what, watch out in 2009 for a group of European Tour Q School qualifiers: Sweden’s Oskar Henningson, Scotland’s Callum Macaulay, Northern Ireland’s Jonathan Caldwell and especially two lads from England – Danny Willett and Chris Wood. I met them all at Q School last year after writing my book Golf On The Edge (which was about Q School) and they are the most talented group of youngsters ever to come onto the Tour together. They are all in their early 20s and at least one will win an event this year and I bet one will win a major one day. They are THAT good!

    Ross,

Thanks for the reply. I like the new crop of qualifiers from “both sides of the pond” this year. I will keep my eyes out for the names you talked about and I will keep my eyes out for your book. Hopefully some of your new friends on tour perform well.
