Want lower golf scores? Buy a push cart
I had long thought that I would be pushing 50 years of age before my ego would allow me to use a push cart on the golf course. Of course my friends all call me gramps now, but as long as I keep taking their money on the golf course, they can call me whatever they feel is necessary.
The truth is, I probably never would have purchased a push cart on my own accord. Luckily, I won one in a contest. It is the best thing that has happened to my golf game in at least five years. Because of the many benefits that come with a cart, it is quite safe to say that I’ll never carry my bag again.
I’m 31 years old, and am able-bodied enough to carry my own bag without any major problems, but using a push-cart is just so much easier! I would like to continue to enjoy the health benefits that come with walking the golf course, along with the mental side, where walking gives you a bit more time to forget a bad shot and prepare yourself for the next one. However, carrying your bag for 18 holes can wear you out by the end of the round, costing you important strokes on the back nine.
My favorite part about using my cart is how easy it makes it to transition from one shot to the next. When you carry your bag, you have to put your club back in the bag, climb inside the backpack straps, walk to your ball, work your way out of your straps, put your bag down while making sure the legs come out correctly, hit a shot, put the club back in the bag, pick the bag back up, and repeat. When using a cart, you simply mosey on over to your ball, pull out your club (which is conveniently waiting for you and facing you in your cart), hit the ball, put the club back, and continue leisurely walking to your next shot.
Furthermore, most carts will come with a scorecard holder on the handle, a compartment for valuables and accessories, a slot for an umbrella holder, and a drink holder, which means no more annoying spills when you have to try to put your can or bottle on the uneven ground. If it is possible to make it any easier, keep in mind that these carts roll so well nowadays that you can push it with just a few fingers, or if you’re lazy like me, you can push it around with your belly and let it roll down hills by itself.
For years and years, the Cadillac of push carts has been the Sun Mountain Speed Cart. If I was going to buy one at the time, it most likely would have been the Speed Cart. You just can’t go wrong with a Sun Mountain product, as those Montana guys really seem to know what they’re doing. The newcomer to this category is the Clicgear Cart, which is the model that I won. It works perfect for me because it has a slightly smaller size when folded than the Speed Cart, and it fit in my smallish trunk quite perfectly. In response, Sun Mountain has since come out with the Micro Cart, which seems to be a fantastic product as well. Either way, you can’t go wrong. Even if those are a little more than you would like to spend on a cart, some of the less expensive models out there will still add a great deal of convenience and comfort to your golf game.
These features are all well and good, but push carts also carry the biggest benefit of all….they lower scores. The first time I ever used my cart, I shot the best score I have ever shot on my home course. I played again that week and shot another very low score by my standards. My scores have dropped 4-5 strokes per round instantly, and there is no way I’m ever going to carry my clubs again.
Playing through is one of the great mysteries in the world of golf….
